SilverGlo Kneewall Insulation in Lawrenceburg, KY

SilverGlo Kneewall Insulation in Lawrenceburg, KY

Before After
SilverGlo Kneewall Insulation in Lawrenceburg, KY SilverGlo Kneewall Insulation in Lawrenceburg, KY

This customer in Lawrenceburg, KY had batt insulation in the attic and kneewall spaces that had been compromised. She had one room upstairs that seemed to stay hotter than the other rooms and wanted to know what was going on.

We found that the attic and kneewall spaces had not been air sealed prior to the batt insulation being installed. We were also able to verify that the existing batt insulation had been compromised (you might be able to see the black specks throughout the insulation in the "Before" photo).

We explained that gaps and cracks behind the batt insulation were allowing air to flow up and down from the house to the attic space. We also explained the potential health hazards of allowing compromised insulation to remain in the attic and kneewall spaces.

The best way to fix the issues were to remove the batt insulation, air seal the area, install SilverGlo on the kneewall (shown iin the "After" photo) and blow-in cellulose insulation in the attic space.

Typical Attic Issues in Lawrenceburg, KY

We see a ton of attics here in Central, KY. Sometimes it can be difficult to get just 1 photograph that shows a couple of different issues at the same time, but here is one!

The first thing that grabs my attention is the batt insulation. It is bunched up is some areas (see the blue arrow) and is sticking up in others (see the purple arrow). Both of these methods are incorrect. Althought batt insulation may not even be the best product for this particular attic, it definitely isn't providing the maximum r-value because it is not installed properly. Batt insulation should be installed after air sealing has been done AND it should never be bunched up or be sticking out.

The second thing I see is a gap where the roof plywood meets the roof truss (see the red arrow). Although it may not seem like much of a gap, it is allowing air to come into or exit the attic. PLUS, is gives insects and water an easy way into the attic....and the house!

It is very important to seal and insulate the attic properly. Doing so will help make your house more comfortable, add longevity to your HVAC system, help prevent insect and water damage, and help reduce utility costs.
